Road Grants.

Through th’e courtesy of the County Chairman we are able to publish wires exchanged on the subject of the unsatisfactory votes allocated to the Mangonui County for road work. “ To the Right Honorable the Premier, Wellington. “ Estimates to hand are very disappointing. Nothing on the main back block road through County. Money urgently needed; doubt if mail coach will get through next winter. Milk suppliers debarred from factories. Apply to you for help. Following grants most urgent Mangonui Beach road £200; Mangonui to Oruru Dairy Factory £2OO ; Oruru Dairy Factory to Fairburn Creamery £400; Fairburn Creamery to Flat bush £200; Dunn’s to Kaitaia Dairy-Factory £1000; Kaitaia to Awanui £SOO. G. Wilkinson, County Chairman.” The Premier has not had the good grace to reply to the above. A similar wire to the before quoted was sent Mr. R. M. Houston, M.P., who promptly replied as follows: “ To Mr. G. Wilkinson, Oruru.” Have seen the Minister who says nothing can be done but he will see what can be done on the Supplementary Estimates. R. M. Houston. A further wire has been received from Mr. Houston to the effect that there were £6,017 in the estimates for the Mangonui County aud that the Member would do his best to get votes on the Supplementary Estimates. The County Chairman points out to U 6, and we fully recognise his accuracy of view, that though there are £6017 on the Estimates for expenditure in this County there is no vote for metalling the main road which i 6, as it were, the life and source of our main industries. He points out that there is nothing to complain of in the amount voted but that the allocation is rotten and disgusting. The requests of the County have simply been ignored in each and every ease. Through the method of allocation the upkeep of the main road will be thrown entirely on the Local Body and to add insult to injury the Government are asking the Council to contribute one fourth of the cost of the erection of White’s bridge, Oruru.
