OUR NEIGHBOURS.
FAIRBURN. (From our own Correspondent.) Our popular J.P. being in Auckland, enjoying a well-earned holiday, those requiring his services have the inconvenience of journeying to Kaitaia or elsewhere. Many who think the business of a country J.P. is a sineoure would he surprised at the calls on his time even in a small place like Fairhurn. The Fairhurn .School Committee were unable to unanimously agree as to the choice of a sewing mistress, all the candidates being favoured. A solution of the difficulty was found in the ballot and Miss R. May was the one to draw the position.
A targe contingent fiom Fairhurn will he going to Auckland for fleet week, some of them to sample the mystery of the electric car, etc., for the first time. Grave fears are expressed as to the safety of the horses duiing the passsge, and it is hoped the Steamship Coy. will have proper facilities for the fifty or more horses which will be embarked by the Mangonui Mounteds and others.
The residence of Mr. W. Hosldn, in the Otukai block, is now nearly completed. It is a substantial building, lined and properly finished throughout. Mr. A. Wallace is head carpenter on the job.
Mr. H. Parker, of Fairhurn, has arranged to milk Mr. John Garton’s herd of cows for next season. Mr. Parker has been trained for dairy milking in a good school, to wit at Kaitaia, and as he will have the use of one of the best paying herds in the County the arrangement will no doubt be mutually satisfactory. Messrs. T. J. and R. Coulter are very busy felling bush on their respective sections iu the Otukai block. The weather is—well, seasonable, and despite the almost incessant rain fencing, bushfelling aud other improvements are proceeding rapidly all along the line. The people of Fairhurn and Kaiaka think it is quite time a government grant for metalling part of the main road came along. The Couuty Council has quite enough to do without making main roads passable. In comparison with some other places I could name the traffic on the Fairhurn main road is enormous. Fairbum, July 14.
