KIPLING IN A NEW ROLE.

Not very long ago Mr. Kipling was on one of those long voyages he is so fond of taking. All went well till the ship reached mid-ocean, when one of the stewards fell ill and died.

Within an hour there appeared on the ship’s notice-board this brief announcement' :

“Serrpon by a layman at 9 p.m.” Everyone wondered- who the preacher would bo ; and when evening came, and they gathered in the saloon, they discovered that the speaker was none other than Rudyard Kipling himself. Standing on an improvised platform, he delivered an address of fifteen minutes' duration. That he reached the hearts of his hearers is best proved by the fact that he was able to collect £7O for the steward’s wife and family. This must be almost a record sum, considering the size of his audience, which numbered scarcely two hundred.
