The village teacher, after a very, trying and laborious afternoon's work, had at length made the class understand the meaning of the term “bitter end."
“Now, boys," he said, “I want all of you to write a sentence ending with the words "bitter end." . The youngsters got to work. One boy wrote : "I drink the medl-K cine to the bitter end." Another wrote : “The Boers fought to the bitter end." A little Scotch lad’s effort read : “Our fox terrier ran after Jones’s black cat last week, and as it was running through the fence he ‘bitter end.’ ”
