A LONG-DISTANCE RUNNER.

A good story used to be Manchester footracing circles of | “Choppy” Warburton, the worldfamed trainer. In the old days he stood at the top of the long-distance | runners, his training powers being tremendous. He was once training for a long-distance race on a track near Manchester, and after stripping one evening for a spin, asked his trainer how far he had better go. “Oh,” said the latter, “Keep on till I tell you to stop.” And “Choppy” started. After watching him for a few mile* the trainer was invited by a friend to join in a game of billiards. He went, and game succeeded game until bed time came, and the trainer toddled home, forgetting all about his promising pupil. Next morning he thought he would explain his forgetfulness to “Choppy’ and apologise to him. “Choppy” had not been home, he was told.

Hurrying down to the track to see ,whether by chance Warburton was there, he heard the pad of a light step as he turned the corner of the pavilion, and the next moment he stared aghast ! “Choppy” was still
