WHAT MOTHER USED TO SAY.
I went to hear a lecture at the church the other day—By a man renouned for what he know r s and things that he can say ; I thought perhaps that I would learn some wisdom most profound And gather up some knowledge from the lot he’d scatter round ; But my ! I found I was surprised when—though I had to pay— The things he said did not compare w’hat mother used to say.
I’ve reed some books on how to live to be well all my life—And how to bring my children up, and how to treat my wife, In fact on every subject they tell you what to do, But seems to me they cannot tell me anything thats new ; For I heard far better teachings back in my youthful days When I listened to the simple truths that mother used to say. So they can have their lectures anti books of wisest lore, And orators and teachers and professors by the score ; But I’ve found by years of living that the safest was for me Is to stick right to the teachings that I've learned at mother’s knee, And to the end of Kf* to try to live from day to <tay And be, ffvMed oa my
