A Town Without Rates.
A town that levied no rates would, other things being equal, be rather au attractive place to live in. Mr. Connor, a member of the Dunedin City Council, speaking at Dunedin a few days ago, stated that if the ratepayers returned to the City Council wLy men of sound business principVs, it was possible that in ten veals,..or so Dunedin might be in the Jiv/py position of not requiring to Vivy any rates. Had the electorate of Kaipara been in existence ten years ago, and been represented by Mr. A. E. Ilardin'g, llob«ou County would to-day have Wu the best roaded and least rated county in the colony. Ibis would have been due to the large timber royalties the district would have been entitled to. As a proof of hoW Hobsmi County would have ltenefited, we may state that Hokiangn’s moiety of the Huaki kauri area is expected to realise £611,090. Mr. Harding’s action in securing the northern counties their rights of the remaining timber values will never be forgotten by tho legitimate go-ahead settler to whom good roads are th* 1 osRon“o of piwperitv.—“N. A. Times.”
