More Ways Than One.
Not long ago (says the Sydney Bulletin) the representative of one of the biggest Anglo-Australian mining corporations visited the Hand, and after inspecting the Chow-infest-ed workings of the two biggest mines, ascertained that the cost of labour was 265. a ton. This started him thinking ; he communicated with his fcllow-syudi-cators, and, after much calculation, they concluded that they could carry out the work by the more efficient labour of white men at about 19s. a ton. The upshot was that the corporation offered to take up the working of one of the big mines on contract at 20s. a ton. “ With white labour ? ” asked (lie head of the Band mine sn«piei'mslv. “ Yes,” was the reply. " lheu we won’t touch it.” The astouuded Australian demanded an explanation why the compauy should refuse the opportunity of doubling its huge profits. The manager shrugged his shoulders. “ Political reasons,” he remarked, and added with a smile, “ there are more ways of nndcing money than out of dividends, you know.”
