Herekino.
(From our own Correspondent.) Grass-seed sowing is about finished here now, and a good acreage has been sown down. The burns this year were not too good, owing to the showery season. A meeting of householders was held at the school on the 22nd, at which the following gentlemen were elected members of the school committee for the ensuing year, viz., Messrs. Murray, Barker, Dunn, Smith, Derrick, Moore and Lecoustre. A school has been established at Owhata and has an attendance of 25. On the 24th April Mr. M. V. Baker was married to Miss J. Smith at Kaitaia. In the afternoon a number of friends were entertained at the bride’s home, and in the evening a large number aseembled at Mr. BunkuH’s Hall, where dancing was indulged in and a very pleasant evening spent. Mr. Edwards, manager of the M.T. Co.’s mill, has been recuperating his health at Botorua. He is expected back in the course of a day or two. April 27, 1907.
PLAIN AND FANCY DBESS BALL. (From a Correspondent.) A grand plain and fancy dress ball was given by the bachelors here on March 22nd in Mr. Bunkall’s fine hall. The hall was tastefully decorated for the occasion and the floor was in splendid condition. Tho music was supplied by Mr. Christensen and son in their usual brilliant style. The hall was nicely filled, and there were many handsome dresses worn. Mr. Corbett, from Owhata, carried out the duties of M.C. in a very able manner. Vooal items were rendered by Miss E. Brown and Mr. Graves. A most excellent supper was provided, and fruit, etc., taken round at. intervals, to which ample justice was done. Many of the fancy dresses created great amusement. The following are some of the fanoy dresses worn Miss <4. Brown—Gipsy. Mrs. Corbett—Nurse. Mrs. Lowe—Japanese Lady. Miss F. Derrick—Scotch Lassie. Miss E, Brown—Sailor Girl. Mrs. Murray—Lady of Eighteenth Centnry. Mies Bunkall—Doctor of Music. Miss Shepherd—Oriental. Miss E. Bunkall—Starry Night. Miss K. Bunkall—Hungarian Gipsy. Mis. Barker—Gipsy Fortune Teller. Miss L. Bunkall—Fairy. Several of the gentlemen were also attired in fancy costumes, the most prominent being Mr. Garland (Page), who was the recipient of many admiring glances from the ladies, Mr. (F. Moore acted his part to perfection as “Baby,” Mr. Priestly (Bags and Patches), Mr. T. Vercoe (Cricketer), Mr. Lowe (Tramp), and others too numerous and ridiculous to mention, which caused an immense amount of laughter. The dance was k»nt up until the early morning, when one and afi 'Winded their way home after having thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The bachelor’s deserve great credit for the way in which eveiything was so successfully earned out, and I am sure they must he well pleased at the success of this—their first fancy dress ball. WEDDING BELLS, A very pleasant evening was spent here on April 24th in Mr. W. C. Buiikall’s magnificent hall, a dance being held to oelebrate the wedding of Mr. Meredith Y. Baker ami Miss J. Smith, ho'h of lliis .district. The bride was cnarmiiigly attired in white silk, with the orthodox veil and orange blossoms, and was attended •by the bridegroom’s sister, Miss Annie Baker, who was also attired in white. The bridegroom was attended by Mr. C. Smith, brother of tho bride. The hall was tastefully decorated ior the occasion, and the attendance was very good considering the inclement weather which was then prevailing. During the evening Beveral vocal items were rendered by Miss E. Brown, Mr. McMillan, Mr. W. Budd and Mr. Olsen. The music, supplied by Mr. C. Christensen, of Fairburn, and the floor were all to he desired, and the dancing was kept np till six in tho morning. Light refreshments were handed round at intervals and supper was partaken of at twelve. Mr. H. G. Powell rendered his servicer as M.C. efficiently. The bride was (lie. recipient of numerous handsome and useful presents, which were displayed for inspection during the evening. Altogether everything was as “Mere” us wedding bells and the fun was immense. Now then, boys, roll up with your tin cans ! Still there’s more to follow. “ Mamf,.”
