There are now said to be one thousand s\Vorn assassins in Russia. Last month’s beer duty for Auckland totalled £2672, an increase of over £4OO. Waterson, sen., at Dalfield (Wairarapa) a few days ago. There is a slight declivity near the house, down which the animal slipped. The vehicle to which it was attached did not follow, and the horse was hung up by the harness, and choked to death. A significant feature of a series of literary competitions held under the auspices of a Southland temperance organisation during the Christmas holidays, was the fact that the whole of the prizes for the best essay on the subject “ Why Should I Abstain from Smoking ” were gained by feminine competitors. Houston, Ahipara.* A bottle, which drifted ashore at the Castle Rock, Londonderry, has been found to contain an authentic document giving the only news ever received as to the fate of the liner Huronian, which disappeared during a terrible gale in the Atlantic in 1902. The document declares that the liner Avas top-heavy, and was rapidly sinking at the moment of writing.
