The North Auckland Age WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED “ THE MANGONUI COUNTY TIMES ” AND “ THE BAY OF ISLANDS TIMES." TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 1907. BREVITIES.
Mr. Woodham, of Phillips, Blakcy and "Wood l lam, drapers, is dtie in Mangonui 10-day. Rev. W. Scott held divine service in Carton’s hall, Mangonui, on Sunday evening last. Mangonui Council met on Friday last, A report of the proceedings will appear in our next issue. Several cases of typhoid fever are reported in Mangonui. Dr. Forbes is, we i egret to hear, one of the victims. The Victoria Valley annual school picnic passed off pleasantly on Friday last. 'There was a good gathering, and all had a jolly time. Mr. Thos Watts has been reappointed overseer for Mangonui County Council for the ensuing year. He has ‘also been elected tax collector. The marriage is announced to. take place at Waimate North on the Kith January, of Mr. Dalton to Miss Evelyn I layes, daughter of Mr. D. D. Hayes. Our Lady Friends greatly appreciate the Roslyn Summer-weight Combimations and Bloomers, a’s t Roslyn Cashmere Stockings, Dress .Tweeds and Unshrinkable Flannel. Xmas and New Year feasting and noting is over, and now we once more settle down to solid graft. For another twelve months we are all after the shekels, and how many of us will remember the words of the ancient benediction—“ Peace on earth and goodwill to men ” ? A meeting will be held in McKay’s hall, Mangonui, on Friday evening, Uth Januaiy, at 7. 30 p.m., with the object of arranging some method of showing the district’s appreciation of Captain Farquhar’s long connection with this port. We hope to see a large attendance at the meeting. Last Friday the old Clansman was brought into MaDgcnui in good time by Captain McLeod. Her new skipper is one of nature’s gentlemen and makes friends wherever he goes. He is a worthy successor to Captain Farquhar and we trust his connection with the Auckland—Mangonui service may always be a happy pne,
Tenders are called for work at Fairburn, specifications at Mr. J. McKay’s. See advt. Attention is drawn to the alteration of the time-table for Mr. Geo. Cochrane’s coach. The alteration appears on the inside page of this issue, and the old time-table appearing on the front page is now cancelled. No doubt many will maids the excursion trip to Parenga for the rAbes on Friday next. The s.s. Apanui will leave Awanui for Parenga on 10th at 4 a.m., leaving Parenga on the return journey on 12th at 4 a.m., calling at Houhora and Waiharara each way. The Rev, A. J. Seamer, who was formerly in charge of the WhangaroaMangonui circuit, will hold divine services on Sunday next, 13th instant, as follews:—Fairbum 11 a.m., Oruru 3 p.m., Mangonni 7 p.m. Mr. Seamer has recently been appointed missionary to the Maoris, and will probably take charge from March next of the wide district that lies between the Bay of Islands and the North Cape. “ I notice you say ‘ Charlie ’ Molloy, Neil McLeod and 1 Old Joe ’ carry good stocks of beer,” said a Herekino man to us the other day, 11 but our boys ■ran them pretty well short at Xmas time.'* It was a case of wait till the next boat.” Of course, we didn’t infer that the hotels in question carried a Captain Cook brewery, but we know the quality is O.K. To Cure Indigestion and Stomach Troubles it is necessary to take after meals some harmless preparation which will supply the natural digestive fluids which every weak stomach lacks. And the best preparation of this character is Dr. Sheldon’s Digestive Tnbules, which contain all the natural digestants which nature requires for prompt digestion. One or two taken after meals will prevent souring, fermentation, and acidity, and ensure complete digestion and assimilation 1 Price 2s. Gd. per tin. Obtainable at: J. Evans and Sons, Waipapakauri; R. V. Johnston, Kaitaia; J. McKay, Fairbum; W. C. Bunkall, Herekino; T. Houston, Ahiparn. * \V*\CV The Rev. W. Scott will hold divine services as follows on Sunday next, 13th instant:—Awanui 11 a.m., Mangatete 2.30 p.m., Kaitaia 7 p.m. Mr. Scott regrets that he was inadvertently prevented from making a previously arranged visit, but at the present time knows of no obstacle to his carrying out the programme as above mentioned. The Mangonui Sheffield Handicap, postponed from New Year’s Day, was run in Mrs Bergban’s paddock on Saturday last. Results : —First heat, 100 yds: C. Hassett 1, A. Penney 2, C. Hands 3; second heat, 200 yds: A. Penney 1, C. Hassett 2, C. Hands 3 ; third heat, 300 yds : A. Penney 1, C. Hassett 2, C. Hands 3. G. Thompson also started in each heat. The winners consequently were : A. Penney (13 points) 1, C. Hassett (11 points) 2. Revs. A. J. Seamer and W. Scott left Mangonui this morning for the North Cape, overland, via Awanui, Waipapakauri and Houhora. They purpose spending the remainder of the week in exploring the outlying settlements of “the neglected North,” holding divine services wherever practicable. Their arrangements for Sunday next are notified elsewhere. Now that typhoid has made a reappearance in our midst it behoves resir dents to take extraordinary precautions to prevent the possibility of an epidemic. There must be something radically wrong with Mangonui’B sanitary arrangements when we have this constant recurrence of the dreaded fever. Lime is cheap and is a good disinfectant the free use of which might assist in eradicating the beautiful effluvia that infects the Beach Road at times. The sports advertised to take place in Mr. H. C. Powell’s paddock on New Year’B Day passed off very pleasantly. The weather cleared in the morning, and upwards of 250 people attended. The whole of the programme could I not be carried out, and a number of the events were held over and will be contested at another sports meeting to be held shortly. The high jump for horses resulted in a tie between Mr. G. M. Powell’s Butcher Boy and Mr. A. C. Powell’s Black Prince. The dance held on the evening of the sports was very enjoyable also. Perfect Digestion Means Perfect Health. A good stomach keeps every part of the body in perfect condition, and Disease cannot break in. Dr. Sheldon’s Digestive Tabules are a natural remedy for all disorders and weaknesses of the stomach. They possess exactly the same properties as the gastric juices and other digestive fluids of the stomach. They actually do the digestive work of the stomach, and enable that organ to rest, recuperate, and become sound and healthy. They act in a mild, natural manner, and cause no disturbance in the digestive organs. They prevent any fermentation of the food, which causes sour stomach. Dr. Sheldon’s Digestive Tabules instil health into every part of the human body. They compel perfect digestion of the food and perfect assimilation of the food nutriment. Every organ of the body is kept in repair, and good health necessarily results. At the same time the stomach, being relieved of its work, gets well and strong .Obtainable at: J Evans & Sons, Waipapakauri; It.V. Johnston, Kaitaia: J. McKay, Fairbum; W. C. Bunkall, Herekino; T. Houston, Ahipara. *
