Mangatete.
(From our own correspondent.) The work at the saw-mill is progressing steadily. The circular saw has been in use some time, cutting timber needed for the construction of the mill, aud the breakdown saw is to be used as well this week. A good waggon road from the mill to the Pekerau hush is being made under the supervision of Mr. W. Long, The skidded road is to be extended about 30 chains into the bush. A gang of crosscutters has been at work for the last week and in about three weeks the work there will be in full swing. About a fortnight back the Mangatote footballers sent a challenge to the “Cable” team. This was accepted and on Saturday last the team went to Mangonui fully expecting to play against the “Cable," and received a decided shock on finding that the team they were to play against consisted not of “ Cable ” players alone but also of men picked from the Mangonui and Mangamuka teams. Fortune seemed against Mangatote, for not long before the match one of their best players became ill and an emergency had to be taken on, and besides that the referee, to speak mildly, was a trifle slow and seemed to suffer from defective eyesight when his side made any infringement of the rules. Nevertheless the Mangatote boyt made a very plucky attempt and were defeated only by 12 points to 9, after a very fast and interesting game. The hospitality bestowed oa
quite positive that if the same teams oould play on the Mangatote ground under the control of a disinterested and impartial referee, the result of the game would be decidedly different. September 17th, 1906.
