The New Land Bill.

The following communications, in reference to the above, have been handed to us for publication ; Mr. G, Wilkinson, Chairman Mangonui County Council. Dear Sir, , I am sending you a copy of the Hon. Mr. McNab’s Land Act Amendment. You will please put. it before your Council, and let me have their opinion on same. I may state lam entirely opposed to the provisions of the bill, and will do all I can to oppose it. Let mo have your ,reply as soon as you can.—Yours etc., R. M. Houston. County Office, Mangonui, 24th September, 1906. R. M. Houston, Esq., M.H.R. Dear Sir, Your letter and the HonP-Mr. McNab’s new Land Act Amendment to hand.

In reply I beg to say that I have consulted the members of the Mangonui County Council and they are most strongly opposed to the bill as its provisions apply particularly to the North Island, and there is really very little Crown Land left in tlie South Island fit for closer settlement. And also this Council feels that if this bill finds its way to the Statute Books it is the thin end of the wedge to other faddish and objectionable legislation. We, ns a Council and representatives of the ratepayers of this County, are strongly in favour of the optional tenure mifch the right to acquire the freehold. This Council appreciates your efforts in opposing the bill, and we trust you will do your best to oppose it at every turn.—l have tbe honour to be, sir, G. Wilkinson, Chairman,
