DAY DREAM ON THE LEVEE.
Two darkies lay sprawled on the levee on a hot day. Moses drew a long sigh and said : “Hcey-a-h-h ! Ah wish ah had a hund’ed watah-mel-lons !" Tom’s eyes sparkled. “Dah would suttenly be fine. An' if y,o' had a hunded watah-mellons, would yo' give me fifty ?" “No," was the answer, “Ah would not give you no fifty watah-mellons!' “Would yo' give me twenty-five ?" “Seems to me yo's powerful stingy, Mose. Wouldn't yo’—wouldn’t yo’ give me one ?" “No,” came back. “Ah wouldn't give you one. Look a hyah, niggah, are yo' so good-for-nolhin' lazy dat yo’ caihn't wish fo' yo' own watahmellons ?"
