At a municipal meeting in a suburb of Manchester the candidate was addressing the electors of the ward, and, after eulogising his past work in the council, and promising a thou-sand-and-one reforms in the future, he began attacking the claims to election put forward by his opponent, To sum up, he said : “I wish you to understand, gentlemen, that my opponent is an entire stranger, inexperienced, incompetent, and knows absolutely nothing of municipal government and economy ; in fact, gentlemen, my opponent has not a leg to stand upon.” A wag at the back of the hall shouted : “The more reason that he should havs a seat j,”
