FROM SOUTH AFRICA.
Sooq alter the Boer War a friend of mine, a corporal in the military police, who had just returned from tlie front, came to stay with me, and among his many interesting stories he related the following :
It was while he was at Pretoria. Four Boer prisoners escaped, and the police had to search the houses. In one of them they found one of tho doors locked. The mistress stated that her four daughters were in bed, but she was ordered to open the door and revealed to the police four maids in nightdresses and caps. Rut the officer thought that they had rather large feet for women, and so he made them get out of bed. When they did so the astonished policeman saw a pair of trousers and a rifle under each nightdress. So the four prisoners were promptly marched off to the lock-up. „On arrival there, it was found that they really were women. They had, however, by making the police believe that they were the missing men enabled the four Boer soldiers to escape.
