Men who have Fought for the Empire.

Views of an ex-Contingenter. What is meeting with the hearty approval of all ex-contingenters nt any reunions, etc., held by them is the condemnation of a certain section of the Press of ;the colony, whose chief delight is in the libelling of every oontingenter who appears before the law courts and pooling all ex-soldiers in the criminal class. They forget that the percentage of ex-soldiers who appear before the Courts is remarkably small, considering the multitude who went from these shores to the war. They would have the fair name of the New Zealand Contingents stink in the nostrils of the public, but we would ask them to give just an atom of credit to the ninety and nine per cent, of the men who did honourably and well, and ever strove to make the name of New Zealand regiments famous on the field, aud no less famous in the camp. At the Southland Returned Troopers’ Association held on the 12th December, 1905, Mr. Hanan M.H.R., stated that heesteemedit a duty and privilege to be present as the representative of the town to show the men who had so ably upheld the honour of the British flag in South Africa that their’ work was not forgotten, but was still esteemed and valued. If the call of the Em;lire sounded again he was certain all would again respond. A Voice Evert Time.
