The curious dwarf trees imported from Japan are pretty familiar to most people, but one must go to Japan to see them in their proper place in miniature landscapes, one with its hills, trees, bridge, stream and lake will stand on an ordinary dining-table. The trees consist of pines, oaks, cypresses and maples, whilst by the lake side grow' miniture bamboos less than two inches in height. The trees are very old, probably 200 years of age. Great care and patience are required to make the trees grow in the various forms dictated by the canons of Japanese art, and much artistic taste is brought to bear in the arrangement and balancing of the masses which make up the garden.
