A BEAR KILLER.
Stretched on a wooden frame in the , front yard of his house are the skins ; , of two cub bears and the mother bear, | which Newton Stowell killed with a j | pocketknife after a fight lasting more 1 ! than two hours. Stowell's body is covered with cuts and scratches, and the physicians say that lie may not j recover from liis wounds. I The battle between a man and bears took place as Stowell was on his way home from a day’s work in the woods. He was within a mile of the town when he saw the cubs nestled at the roots of a big tree, and apparently asleep. Stowell had no weapon with him but an axe and a pocketknife with a blade less than ! four inches long. Stowell grabbed both cubs.diy the scruff of the neck, j and was putting one under each arm when he was struck a blow on the shoulder that knocked him down and rendered him partly senseless. As he rolled down the hill he saw the mother bear making towards him. He had dropped the axe when he picked the cubs from the ground, and ; he had just time enough to get his knife from his pocket before the j mother bear got to his side. As she j made a swipe at him with her paw, Stowell caught her in the throat ! with a thrust from his weapon. j Stowell scrambled to his feet and i started on a run down the hillside, j’ the cubs following with leaps and bounds. "The mother bear followed a 1 short distance, and then fell to the ! ground dead. Stowell then killed the j cubs and removed the skins from the three animals and started home. But j . his left arm had been broken, and he was obliged to drop his load before he had gone far.
