Mangonui Maori Village Committee.

Tlie.Mangoiiui Maori Village Committee sat at Kenana on the 2nd May, 1906. The members present were Councillors Wi Korehoma (chairmau), C. Ngarama Rapihana, Paratene Kapa, Tepana Tukariri, Hare Raharuhi, Henare Kingi, Riwhi Heta, Katana Tamaho, Ratima Apenjhama, Himiona Popata and Tarei Paeara.

The minutes of the previous mooting were read and confirmed.

Proposed by R. T. Pnhipi, seconded by H. King, that a new clerk be elected for the present sitting. Carried. Proposed by Mitikakau Otene, seconded by members of the Council, that all Maori Councils north of Auckland be asked to combine with the Mangonui Maori Council to ask the Government to allow them to collect all rates on Maori lands.

Proposed by H. Baharuhi that all Maori Councils of the colony be asked to subscribe money enough to send a man to the King of England so as to have the Treaty of Waitangi renewed. The chairman asked the proposer to withdraw his proposal. Proposed by H. Bahamhi, seconded by H, King, that all members of both Council and Village Committee should not be allowed to drink any alcoholic liquid. After an explanation from the chairman the proposer withdrew his motion. Proposed by Kori Bakena, seconded by Era Ihaka, that Hone Mare, Herewini Heiwari and Nepia Bo we be nominated as Maori constable for the Kaitaia Biding. It was left to the Kaitaia constable to pick one out of the three. Proposed by Baaka Wiki, seconded by Paratene Kapa, that Constable Wi Mete, of Parengarenga, be asked to resign his position as constable. The chairman called for votes on the motion, which was carried by 9 to 2. Perene Pluirama asked the Council if they had the power to deal with a case such as Makarini Kaweka’s alleged removing of a greenstone Heibiki from an old cemetery at Bangiawhia. The Council took the case in hand, to be tried at the next sitting of the Council at Bangiawhia on July 12th, 1906. Proposed by Perene Huirama, seconded by Ngarama Bapihana, that the Council should enquire from the directors of the “North Auckland Age” what arrangements could be made re printing a Maori edition of their paper. Proposed by Bivvhi Heta, seconded by H. King, that the next sitting of this Council be held at Bangiawhia on the 12th July, 1906. H. King proposed that prizes be distributed in each Kainga for any child (boy or girl) that passes a good examination at their school. The matter was adjourned for the Council to consider at their .next sitting. Proposed by H. King, seconded by Riwhi Heta, that the Village Committee

should get half of botli foes and fine money of all cases heard by them. The motion was negatived by 6 votes to 5. Proposed by H. King, seconded by P. Kapa, that Superintendent Gilbert Mail 1 , Esq., be asked to attend the next sitting of this Council at Eangiawbia. Proposed by Ratirna Aperaliama, seconded by P. Kapa, that R. T. Puhipi take the secretaryship for this sitting of the Council.
