Victoria Valley.

(From our own Correspondent.) It really looks as though our bridge is a sure thing. Loads of timber are arriving every day, and the required quantity is expected to be on the ground in about a fortnights’ time. The contractors have made such quick work of cutting the timber that it is quite possible a good start at the building may be made before tbe winter comes upon us in real earnest. Mr. Dacre, dentist, paid his long-pro-mised visit to Victoria Valley on Friday last. Judging by the people who flocked to him for operation, I think he would be well satisfied with his visit, and no doubt did a roaring trade. Miss Tracey is again among us for the winter, having come up from Auckland by the Clansman last week. Miss D. Kitchen, who has been spending a holiday in town, also returned with her. It speaks well for a district when people come to spend the winter rather than the summer. Pigeon shootng is “off” at present. Disappointed sportsman have returned to say they saw plenty of game, but too far away. I have not heard of any really good bags being taken, so probably the birds have thought discretion the better part of valour, and have retreated into the interior. Hawks seem to be having the best of the game, and during the absence of the gun have been playing terrible havoc with the young poultry. Miss Ida Kirby, who has been seriously ill for some weeks past, is, I hear, progressing favourably under the care of Dr. Hope, of Kaitaia. I understand she will go south, when convalescent, to a more suitable climate. Mr. J. Stevens, of Broadwood, has been in the district buying sheep on behalf of Messrs. Halliwell Bros., butchers, of Kohukohu. Victoria Valley seems to be a favourite rendezvous for sheep buyers, probably on account of its central position.
