AUCKLAND, November 4. The floral fete at Ellcrslie racecourse on Saturday, in aid of the Ladies’ Benevolent Society, was a brilliant success. Perfect weather prevailed, and there were 17,000 visitors. The grandstand was crammed. The takings amounted to £BOO. Tho decorated vehicles of local firms made a unique display, and were much admired. William Gerken, while bush felling at Pukerimu, was killed on Saturday owing to a falling tree striking him. His leg was severed above the knee. He lingered four hours. He was twenty-seven years of age and unmarried. ITELENSVILLE, November 4. A disastrous fire on Saturday night broke out at Stewart Bros.’ baker’s shop, and spreading to the adjoining buildings swept the whole block. Smith’s Terminus Hotel and other building places were entirely demolished. The damage is estimated at £3,000. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The insurance on Bowron Bros.’ tannery, which was completely destroyed * by fire on Friday, totals £30,000. Off y a small portion of the front section of the buildings containing the machinery and stock escaped the flames. Fully men have been thrown out of employulent. The insurances do not cover the losses.
