Land Nationalist Houston and the Freehold.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Our member holds a contemptible view of the intelligence of the Northern people. He says he did not vote against the freehold. He ought to know the repoiis which appeared in “Hansard,” the “Weekly News” and “County Times ” all give the statement an emphatic contradiction. He quibbles on the point and should honestly state Mr. Seddon made him swallow his convictions, as he did on the Shop Act, the Land Commission, and on scores of other points. His printed political address of November 14 if given from a public platform would receive scant attention and rough treatment, and it is a pity he has decided not to hold meetings. Imagine Mr. Houston’s bumptiousness in quoting Tom Bracken’s beautiful lines “Not Understood,” in which he gives those opposed to him to understand they are of “stunted vision,” and have minds of “narrow guage,” and describes himself as a “giant who moulds the age.” Seddon is the “ giant,” Houston the “ age,” and he had better give place to youth and keenness and take a ticket to the Legislative Council. —I am, JIMMY BRACKEN, A brother of Tom’s.
