County Matters.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Recent •venta bring home to ratepayers the need for radical changes in the administrative portion of the County Council; local officials have prove<l to be intolerable—they have too many ropes to pull of their own. I hope the council newly elected will adopt new methods and advertise outside for a stranger, to do the office work, who will not be at the beck and call of “ back-scratching ” cliques. Then again there should lie a recognised office and hours or days when any ratepayer may get all the information he may desire; but I understand at present the inquiring ratepayer is defeated by tho loose rules and undutiful officials. I hope the Council will make a point of seeing that all rates and taxes are paid in a reasonable time in the future ; after which all who fail to pay should be summoned without fear or favour and with the rates in time to carry Government subsidy. Ratepayers know a great deal is lost now by failure to enforce payment. I hope contract labour as far as possible will be used.—l am, etc., WATCHMAN.
