Commercial Report.

Nelson, April 13. Immediately after a very indifferent harvest ia not a time to expect any great change for the better in our depressed state of affairs, but the rapid and unlooked for rise in the priceß of wool and flax cannot but have a beneficial effect on trade generally, while the gold discoveries in the basin of the Buller, drawing as they are a large population to the luangahua and other localities, ia making itself felt in the markets from which their requisite supplies have to be drawn. Nearly 4,000 persons are now congregated in the valley of the Inangahua alone, where twelve months ago the population did not reach 600; and afc the Lyell and other spots population is also increasing, although the increased numbers are not wholly due to new arrivals, but are made up to a considerable extent by persons who have removed from other places on the coast. Still an influx of popv!ation is taking place, and those who are considered capable of forming a sound opinion, are sanguine that a very large and rich gold-field, perhaps the largest and richest in New Zeala* d, will be opened in the Buller within a very few months. At present too little has been done to speak confidently of results, but another month will see one if not two claims at work, when the vevl character of the reefs will be better known. The fact of the March mail being due in Auckland to-morrow week and that half the colony has not yet received its January and Februaiy mails, speaks badly for the San Francisco servic The inconvenience and loss to the colony generally ia very great, for although large mercantile houses protect themselves against such contingencies, by having duplicates of their letters by way of Suez, there are thousands of persons to whom letters from Europe are of great and urgent importance, who rely upon the ordinary mail for obtaining them. After a drought, a heavy full of rain may always be looked for, and the present month ia fulfilling this expectation. Last week there was a rainfall of 6£ inches, and this Week the quantity of rain that has fallen is also very great. The

land was so dreadfully parched up, that the soaking it has received must prove very serviceable. The arrival of the Tyrol, after a lengthy voyage, has filled up stocks, which were getting bare in several articles. After discharging her inward cargo, it is believed she will proceed to Port Underwood to load with wool, flax, and any other produce that may offer for London.
