The Market. AUCKLAND.— June 5.
Flour and Grain. — Flour, best quality, £14 10s. per ton ; second, £11. Bran, Is. 9d. a bushel. Oats, 4s. 3d. a bushel. Potatoes, £6 a ton. Live Stock. — At the Junction Yards the following prices were obtained : — Fat cattle : 74 were penned and sold ; provincial beef realised 365. to 385. ; Wanganui cattle, 325. to 365. ; and first draft, per Island City, from Queensland, from £8 17s. 6d. to £13 15s. per head. Store cattle ; 30 head, from Wanganui and elsewhere, brought from £i 10s. to £6 12s. 6d. per head. Fat sheep : 743 were sold as follow : — Ex Tawhera, from Poverty Bay, 65, at 12s. 6d. to 175. ; ex Star of the South, 120, 12s. 9d. to 16s. 6d. ; ex Rangatira, from Wanganui, 123, at Us. 3d. to 135. ; ex Wanganui, from Wanganui, 364, at Ba. 6d. to 12s. 9d. ; ex Star of the South, 62, at 9s. to 9s. 3d. ; lambs (inferior), ss. each. Flax, &o. — Mr. Alfred Bucklandhcld his monthly sale of wool, hides, flax, skins, and tallow, this day. There was a fair attendance ; bidding brisk for skins, hides, wool, and tallow ; dull for flax of inferior qualities, but lively enough for a first-rate sample. Tow was in demand, but, the qualities being varied, there was a wide range in the prices. The following were the quotations realized : — 19 bales flax, £24 per ton ; 44 bales, £23 55. ; 27 bales. £21103.; 21bales,unbleached,£12; 9 bales, £2o 55.; 2 bales tow, at £10 ; 4 bales tow, at £7 ; and 10 bales tow, at £6 per ton ; skins, from 6d. to 2s. 9d. ; 7 hides, at 11s.; 11 hides, at 143.; tallow, at 31s. 6d. per cwfc. ; locks (washed), 5d. ; 3 bales merino, 6£d. Our flax manufacturers Bhould be careful to send the article into market bleached, as buyers are not ready to bid if they see it of a green colour. The nine bales above mentioned were really of a very superior fibre, and, after a very spirited competition, were knocked down at £20 55. ; while another lot, said to have come from the same manufacturer, could not get a single bid on account of the green colour.
