THE NELSON EXAMINER. Saturday, December 14, 1867.
Journals become more necessary as men become more equal and individualism more to be feared. It would be to underrate their importance to suppose ibat they serve only to secure iberly ; they maintain civilization. DE TOCQUEVJUAK, Of Democracy in America, vol. 5, 230. By the Otago, yesterday morning, we received files of Melbourne journals to the 7th instant. A considerable portion of the contents of these papers is devoted to recording the festivities given in honour of the Duke of Edinburgh, which all appear to have gone off successfully, except the free dinner for the multitude, at Melbourne and Geelong, these were both failures, and became scenes of something like riot and confusion. A special day's racing for the entertainment of his Eoyal Highness, got up on the Flemington course, afforded capital sport, the chief race being won by Tim "Wbiffier, who lately carried off the Melbourne Cup. At our latest dale, his Eoyal Highness was visiting the country districts, shooting rabbits at Barwon Park, and preparing to take part in a great
kangaroo hunt. From some letters which have appeared in the Melbourne papers, it would seem that people had run riot in extravagance during the week's sojourn of the Prince in town, and it is hinted that the tradesmen's bills at the end of the j r ear will cause some worthy heads of families to pull very long faces. The Prince will take Tasmania in his way to Sydney, so that it is not possible to calculate when he may reach New Zealand. In some notices that have appeared of the places which the Prince intends visiting in New Zealand, Auckland, Wellington, and Nelson are mentioned.
