NATIVE WAR INTELLIGENCE.
Our Summary of last month will have prepared our readers for the re-commence-ment of hostilities against the Ngatiruanuis, on the "West Coast of the North Island, rendered necessary by their recent attempts to waylay and murder Major M'Donnell and a small party of officers and men who were out riding. We give the particulars of the campagin as far as they have yet reached us: — Dbpaetube of Majob M'Dotoell's Expedition against the Hau-haus. — We learn from the Wanganui Times, of the 20th of July, that Major M'Donnell and his men left Wanganui for Patea on the preceding day. The Times says:— "At eleven o'clock yesterday, about seventy of the Contingent paraded on the Market place in marching order. They were a fine body of men, nearly all robust young fellows, well fit for a dashing campaign. Captain Kemp addressed them at considerable length. He reminded them of the duty they owed to the Government and to the country in the suppression of rebellion, and that as they were now about to proceed upon a short campaign the country and their friends would expect every man to do his duty. He exhorted them to act with moderation and humanity toward the enemy, to obey the orders of their officers, and warned them against interfering with horses, cattle, or other property belonging to the enemy, unless taken in actual fight. They were not to go about plundering the Hau-haua, but to show them that their only object was the suppression of the rebellion and the permanent peace of the country. He regretted that he could not go with them now, as he would be obliged to go to Wellington, as Mete Kingi required him there ; but on his return himself and another detachment of the Contingent would follow them. The speechifying ended, Major M'Donnell, Captain M'Donnell, Lieutenant Gudgeon, and their men, started amid the cheers and hearty good-wishes of those who had assembled to witness their departure."
