Gentlemen— Your requisition, signed by suoh a large number of my fellow-settlers, including many old and valued friends whose confidence I highly prize, and with whose wishes I should naturally feel it a pleasure to comply, has just been placed in my hands. With the opinion I have always entertained and expressed, as to the obligation which every member of a free, and especially of a young community is under, to place the best public services in his power at the disposal of that community when called upon to do so, I do not feel myself at liberty to urge my own unfitness for the office, or the necessary sacrifice of my private feelings and interest, as sufficient reasons for not complying with such a request. Whilst therefore I must be allowed to say, that I feel myself unequal to the responsible, and in many respects peculiarly unpleasant duties, that I clearly see to be jußt now inseparable from the office you seek to confer upon me, I am prepared, at your request, to place myself in the hands of the electors, in the full confidence that, should they by their votes call upon me to accept the office, they will continue to me the same kind forbearance, consideration, and support, which I have so invambly experienced from them in the execution of the duties connected with the rather numerous public engagements which they have, during the latt ten years, entrusted to my hands. My opinions upon moat provincial questions have been bo frequently expressed in public as to be well known to most of the electors, and the day of nomination will afford me an opportunity to give a full statement of my views upon the present condition, prospects, and requirements of this province.
