SYDNEY.— Febbuaby 18.

The growers in South Australia are endeavouring to force up the price of wheat ; but if anything, such an attempt causes buyers to be more timid than ever. During the last three weeks 4,000 tons of breadstuff's have arrived into this port, and the demand for the country is more narrowly excluded than it was last seson.

By the late agricultural report published in the Argus, of the 10th instant, we perceive that the country mills in Victoria are generally supplied with wheat from local growth for many months to come ; it is therefore only reasonable to infer that the large export surplus in South Australia must find vent ekewhere than m the. Australian colonies. Independent of this we may likewise shortly expect arrivals from Chili of the new harvest, which produce must come into keen competition with the best brands of South Australia, for bakers' use.

The great objection hitherto made by the bakers to the foreign Hour imported hither, has been the fact of its being too old ior their use. Such objection could not apply to nour manufactured from the new crop. Prices close -with a weak tendency. Quotations : — Port Adelaide brands, per ton, £23 to £24, nominal. Best Chilian and Californian ditto, £20 to £22 10s., nominal. Best South Australian wheat, per bushel, 9s. 3d. Best Chilian and Californian wheat, per bushel, Bs. 6d.
