SMALLPOX.
By our Otago Correspondent's letter it will be seen that smallpox has been taken to Otago on board the immigrant' ship Victory, and that the whole of the passengers have been placed in quarantine, as fresh - < cases are said to have broken out among them. The letter says, " Too much caution cannot be exercised in the proper inspection of immigrant ships now arriving from Eng- - ; land." C
We would earnestly caution all person* ■- against boarding any English ship — that© - are two due at this moment-^-until the Health Officer shall have reported Wji&ep , Si , from disease. \. .-;" - i? We would remind our Executive thatlthe> < :,-> Provincial Council, in its session of I860, ; unanimously adopted a report, containing the ' • ' ' following most important suggestions -.-^ ] Your committee would, however, express att opinion that the attention of the Gorernment is required to - > the subject of vaccination, in order that it may be more generally carried into effect throughout the pro*- -~ vince, especially in the outlying districts, where they \ ; have reason to fear it is at present generally neglected j - > and that, pending the passing of an Act of the General Assembly on this subject, the Managing Corn* mitt cc of the Hospital should see that a proper supply of lymph be obtained, and at stated times send approved vaoomators to the several localities ; Or tan such other steps for rendering vaccination general ai they may deem necessary.
