Manufacture of Ice. — A most important discovery appears to have been made in the production of ice. We have had the pleasure of seeing two large blocks, of twenty pounds each, apparently sound and pure. Upon inquiry we found that no chemical element enters into the preparation, that no steam-engine is used in it* production, and that it is possible, should the demand be sufficient, to supply the article for one penny per pound. The apparatus will produce four or five tons a day. It appears that the mode of operating is entirely distinct from that hitherto adopted in this country ; and that, although the main principle on which the apparatus is constructed is known to the scientific, having been recently discovered by a scientific Frenchman, they have not been able to roach anything like the perfection attained in the machinery now in operation. This luxury will be highly appreciated for many purposes besides its use at table ; its antiseptic quality will not be that which is least valuable. We are also informed that there is a principle included in this discovery which is not unlikely to be productive of results of a value and extent which it is impossible even to glance at, much less to appreciate. •—Sydtuy iteming Strald,
