Hocal Entelltsence.

Tue Grove Gardens. — Another ball was held at these Gardens on Wednesday evening last, which was well attended ; indeed the dancing platform .was occasionally too crowded to be comfortable. Bat the utmost good humour prevailed; while the gaily illuminated gardens, the fragrance and freshness of .the flowers, and the music of the German band, gave a zest to the enjoyments of the dance in the brilliant - moonlight, with a good many of the conveniences, but with little of the constraint of the ordinary ballroom. The assemblage was of course a mixed one, but we are happy to record that not a single unpleasant incident occurred to mar the pleasures of the evening. Nelson College.— His Excellency the Governor - has been pleased to appoint Alexander Kerr, Esq., and T. Eenwick, Esq., to be auditors of the receipts and expenditure of the Nelson College. Nelson Cokoneb. — A General Government Gazette, of January 14, contains the appointment by his Excellency the Governor of Thomas Connell, Esq., of Nelson, as Coroner for the district of Nelson. The Waibau Poet.— By a proclamation of the Governor in the New Zealand Government Gazette of January 1, the Wairau has been declared a port, the limits of which are described as follows: — "The river Wairau, including the Opawa branch, and so far . inland as the navigation of the Wairau and the Opawa respectively extends." The legal quay, or landingplace for the port of Wairau, is declared to be M The right bank of the Qpawa-braaoh of th^ river Wairaa, commencing from a point 600 yards below the Police Station, and extending for a distance of 100 yardt, measured down stream, along the bank." Commissioner of Customs. —The ■ Honourable C. W. Richmond has been, by his Excellency the Governor, appointed Commissioner of Customs, and all Collectors of Customs are to receive their instructions from him. Postal Time Table. — A time t\ble of the arrival and departure of mails during the year 1859, between England and Australia, has been published in the Government Gazette, by which it appears that the outward mails leave Southampton on the 12th of each month, and are due in Sydney on the following days : — March 9, April 9, May 8, June 7, July 8, August and the remaining months on the 7th. The homeward mail leaves Sydney at 10, a.m., on the 15th of eaoh' month. The Proposed Bbidoe. — We understand that only three designs were sent in to compete for the premium of £10 offered by the Nelson Board of Works for the best design for a cart bridge over the river Maitai. An architect and a builder, both of whom were totally unconnected with the Board, were requested to examine and give their opinion upon these design*?, but it was found that Mr. Jacobsen's plan, which wa» much admired, was ineligible to receive the premium, in consequence of non-compliance with the terms of advertisement, and especially because the cost of the erection of such a bridge would far exceed the sum of £350, to which extent the price had been limited. The amount of the premium was therefore divided, and £5 each was awarded to the designs of Mr. Akersten and Mr. R. Pickering, as they came nearest to th» terms of the advertisement ; the estimated cost of Mr. Akersten's bridge being £345; that of .MrPickering's, £350. We have not heard whether eitbtt, of the designs is likely to be carried into dfect.f. .
