NELSON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

At a meeting of the Chamber, held on the 18th instant, the following l'esolutions were adopted : — "That, in the opinion of this Chamber, it is expedient, for the convenience of the public, that the long room branch of the customs department should be moved nearer to the centre of the town.

" 1 hat a committee be appointed, consisting of Messrs. Curtis, Scuife, Edwards, and Hays, to draw up a memorial to the General Government, representing the inconvenience of the present postal and customhouse arrangements, with a view to its being presented to the Colonial Secretary by a deputation from the Chamber, on his return from the South. The memorial to be brought before the Ch auber at an adjourned meeting, to be held this day week. " That, in the opinion of this Chamber, it would tend greatly to the advantage of the province to possess a wharf capable of affording accommodation to the expected ma.l steamers, and other vessels of a similar draft of water, in the landing of passengers and discharge of cargo. " That a copy of the resolution of this Chamber, with reference to the propriety of providing a wharf suitable for the mail steamers, be forwarded to the Provincial Government, accompanied by a memorial, praying that his Honour will immediately expend such a sum as will be sufficient to provide a wharf of a suitable character; and that a deputation be appointed to wait on his Honour with reference thereto."

At the adjourned meeting, held on the 25th instant, it was resolved :—: —

" That the memorial to his Excellency the Governor, on the subject of the postal and custom-house arrangements, just read, be adopted; and that the committee which had charge of the same do hand it to tho Colonial Secretary, on his return Jrom the South, for presentation to the Governor."

The Nelson Institute.— By the report of the proceedings of a general meeting of the members of the Nelson Literary and Scientific Institution, printed in our last, it will be seen that the members of the Institution have resolved to reorganize themselves under the above designation. The annual subscription is fixed at ten shillings, and by a resolution passed at a previous public meeting, any person desirous of joining the new Institute may do so by .-ending their names and the amount of their subscriptions to the provisional committee, on or before the Bth of December next. It will be well, therefore, for intending members to bear this in mind, and not be too late m their applications. The united committees, we understand, are busily engaged in preparing a fresh set of rules, to be submitted to a general meeting of the members on the 15th December. \\ o hop. that the new Institute will receive such an amount oi support as shall render it worth) of tho improuii prospects of the town.

Ball. — On Wednesday ever' ing a ball was held at the Trafalgar Hotel. About forty persons wei c present, and partook of thai, pleasurable enjoyment fui which the gatherings at the Trafalgar have long been

SD celebrated ; while it is almost needless to remark tfeat Mr. and Mrs. Ljick used their best endeavours to promote the comfort of then* guests, i Nelson Sheep Association — A special general meeting of the members of the Nelson Working Men's Sleep Association, was held in the schoolroom, Budge-street on Wednesday evening. The directors submitted to the shareholders various pro osjls that hail been made for the purchase of the Company's prfiperty, and after some discussion it was resolved to adjourn the meeting until Monday next to allow the Directors in the interim to consider some other proposals.

The Outer Lang.— This fine clipper vessel haß at last, been condemned, and is to be sold by auction at Wtllington on the 7th December, "for the benefit of wh«m it may concern." The saU' is said (by the advertfeeraent) to be of such absolute necess-ty as to offer strong inducement to parties resident in Nelson and clstwhcre to attend.

Thk tuEATRE.— For the first time in Nelson the play of Othello was produced at this theatre on Tuesday evening. The attendance was not so numerous as we had expected, considering that it wa? the first attempt at the performance of one of the plays of the greit dramatist. The two principal characters, those of Othello and lago, were well ployed by Messrs. Cox and Bertram ; and had the other parts been sustained with an equal amount of ability, the piece would have been much more successful. It is due, however, to Mrs. Clinton, who played the part of Desdemona, to state that the character was undertaken by her at a period so near to the performance as to afford little time fcr study. Mr. Clinton's Cassio was a respectable performance. Some excellent music was played between the acts; and the laughable farce of The Secret concluded the entertainment at a late hour.

New Publication.— By the last mail from Melbourne we have received the first three numbers of The Colonial Mining Journal and Railway and Share Gazette, a monthly publication, devoted, as its name inpoits, to the mining interests of the Australian colonies. In matter and style it is very carefully got up, an<l is a valuable addition to the periodical literature of the colony. It contain? several ably written articles, some of which are illustrated by diagrams, charts, &c. We heartily wish it success.
