TAKAKA. [FROM A CORRESPONDENT.]
Takaka, May 31. A public meeting of the settlers of the Motupipi and Takaka districts was held this day at the Takaka Inn ; Mr. Sparrow in the chair. The first resolution was proposed by Mr. James Baird, who pointed out in forcible language the advantages which were likely to accrue from the mutual co-operation of the settlers, in conducting the affairs and watching over the interests and requirements of the above-named places. The resolution was seconded by Mr. "W. Sheet. 1. That it is the opinion of this meeting that a respectful memorial, signed by the settlers of the above districts, be presented to his Honour the Superintendent, praying that one-half of the grant of £2,000 (which was voted by the Provincial Council last year for the construction of roads, bridges, ferries, &«., in Massacre Bay) be set apart by the Government for the purpose of making two lines of roads in these districts — one leading from Waitapu to Spittal's Fall, the other from. Motupipi to join the same line of road leading up the Long Plain, and that leading on to Motueka, so that both districts may articipate in the advantages of the overland route to Nelson. Carried unanimously. Proposed by Mr. James Baird, seconded by Mr. James Spittal, and carried unanimously — 2. That this meeting respectfully request the services of Mr. H. W. Burt and Mr. Win. Skeet, to prepare and draw up- the memorial in question, and that the same be left at Mr. Spittal'B to receive the signatures of the Takaka settlers, after which to be sent to Mr. G Seymour's, at Motupipi, to receive the signatures of the settlers there, and, when filled up, to be addressed and posted by Mr. Burt. Proposed by Mr. James Baird, seconded by Mr. W. Skeet, and carried unanimously — 3. That a society be formed by the settlers of the Motupipi and Takaka districts, to be called the Motupipi and Takaka Settlers' Association ; the business of which will be, to conduct and guard over the local interests of these districts ; a president, secretary, and six members, to be elected annually, to form a committee ; such committee to meet every three months, or oftener if required, and to draw up any rules that may serve the general interests of the districts ; such rules to be confirmed in a general meeting of the association. Skeet, Bow, Spittal, Coster, and Sparrow represent the interests of the Takaka settlers in the Association ; and Messrs. W. H. Burt, Nicoll, and Baird represent the interests of the settlers of the Motupipi, as a committee for the first twelvemonths, and that the first meeting of the Association takes place on the first Monday in September next. Proposed by Mr. James Baird, and seconded by Mr. George Taylor — 2. That Mr. Sparrow act as chairman to the committee for the ensuing year, and Mr. Burt secretary for the same. Proposed by Mr. Patrick Campbell, and seconded by Mr. James Baird — 3. That it is the opinion of this meeting that a respectful memorial, signed by the settlers and diggers of the Takaka and Anatoki districts, be presented to his Honour the Superintendent, praying that one-half of the one thousand pounds sterling voted by the Provincial Council last year, for the purpose of making roads wherever available gold-fields were found to exist, be awarded to these districts. Proposed by Mr. Baird, and seconded by Mr. Skeet — 4. That Messrs. Spittal and Campbell draw up the said memorial. It was proposed by the Chairman, and seconded by Mr. Patrick Campbell — • 5. That the minutes of this meeting be forwarded to the Examiner and Colonist newspapers. A vote of thanks was unanimously passed for the services* of the chairman.
