MOTUEKA.
[from our own correspondent.]
We were not aware that prior to our remarks having refereuce to the appointment of a Resident Magistrate for this district, that a memorial was in course of preparation, praying his Honour the Superintendent to cause such appointment to be made ; and, from the very general feeling in its favour, there is no question that it will be most numerously signed.
The memorialists consider that Motueka presents no exceptionable difference to the wairau, Amuri, and Massacre Bay Districts, where Resident Magistrates have been appointed, and they confidently rely that no objections will be urged by his Honour, but that he will yield to the prayer of their memorial without delay.
Flour Mill at the Moutere. — A public meeting was held at the Motueka Hotel, on Thursday evening, November 26th, to take into consideration the desirability of erecting a water flour-mill, at the Moutere. Mr. John Barton, practical engineer aud millwright, stated that there existed every facility for such a work ; there was a good natural fall of at least four feet, and that the cost would not exceed £450. The eligibility of the site alluded to was confirmed by several gentlemen well acquainted with the locality. After some discussion, a resolution was unanimously adopted, " that a water flour-mill would be a most material benefit to the district ;" and a committee was appointed to report upon the practicability thereof, and to suggest the best means of effecting so desirable an object. Motueka Literary Institution. — The handsome building now in course of erection for the above institution, we are confidently assured will be fully completed before Christmas. The committee intend to celebrate the opening thereof by a musical festival, in which the Nelson Harmonic Society have kindly consented to take part. There* will be also a grand display of fireworks, under the able superintendence of Mr. J. Winterburn. We may, therefore, look forward to a treat of rare excellence, and that at no very distant day. The committee have lately received, direct from England, upwards of 200 volumes of new and standard works, forming a valuable addition to their library.
