PUBLIC MEETING.

At a public meeting held at the Court House, Nelson, on Thursday evening, the 2/th instant, to consider the advisability of memorializing the Provincial Government to secure the land and buildings now advertised for sale by the Wesleyans, it was Proposed by Mr. Sharp, seconded by Mr. Hume, and carried unanimously : —

That, in the opinion of this meeting, it is desirable that the Government should acquiro the land and buildings now advertised for sale by the trustees of the Wesleyans, for the purpose of ultimately removing the present buildings, and throwing open the site as an approach to the town ; and that his Honor the Superintendent be requested to lay the matter before the Provincial Council, and ask that body to provide the means of acquiring the same.

Proposed by Mr. Hill, seconded by Mr. Webb :—: —

That the chairman do transmit a copy of the foregoing resolution to his Honor the Superintendent. Wm. Thos. Locke Travers, Chairman.

Daguerreotype Portraiture. —We would recommend such of our readers as have not already paid a visit to Mr. Crombie's portrait gallery, to do so without loss of time, as that gentleman's stay in Nelson is likely, we understand, to be very short. The likenesses taken by Mr. Crombie are decidedly the best we have seen in this colony.

Non-arrival of His Honor the Judge. — The steamer has arrived again from Wellington without bringing the Judge to hold a sitting of the Supreme Court here. His Honor's continued indisposition is the cause of this disappointment ; but this only renders it the more necessary that some arrangement should be made to guard the public against the evils which arise from these delays in the administration of justice.

Archdeaconry Board. — It will be seen, b} r a reference to our advertising columns, that a general quarterly meeting of the above-named Board will be held on Wednesday next, and that, an important communication from the Bishop having been received, a full attendance of members is requested.
