CANTERBURY.

The Gipsy, which arrived here from Wellington on Sunday morning last, fills up the gap created m our coasting and river craft, by the loss of the Catherine Anne. The sailing powers of this little schooner is well known, and we trust that she will prove a valuable accession to our " channel fleet," and be a source of profit to the owner. — Lyttelton Times, April 23. Sale of Town Reserves. — At the sale on Thursday last, held at the Royal Hotel, Christchurch, only one of the sections put up realized above the upset price. For this section there was a spirited competition. By an advertisement in our columns today, it will be seen that several additional sections have been applied for. — Ibid. Sporting Intelligence.— We have just heard that a match came off at Kaiapoi on Wednesday, 23rd instant, between "Alice Grey," ridden by Jannaway, and "Mosquito," ridden by W. Hanmer, for £10 a-side, in which "Alice" was the victor. No further particulars of the race has reached us. — Ibid, April 26. At the time when a fear too generally prevails that the larger public works of the province may coire 'o a deadlock, it is gratifying to be enabled to chroii^le the progress which the men tinder the control of Mr. Hughes are making on what, is termed the "Grent South Road." The imaginative may indeed picture the Government " four-in-hand " traversing this road en route for Otago, while another well-caparisoned " turn-out," similarly bedizened with the royal arms, branching off at the spur above Cass's Bay, curving this valley, and passing through a tunnel opening out on Wilson's bridge, dashes through the capital on its way to Nekon. They may even picture in their mind's eye the professional lift of the whip, and the scientific gathering up of the reins by the " Welters" of the day, as the " leaders " pass each other on their separate ways intent. But ours is a simpler task. We have only to record the fact that a good bridlepath has been cut from Lyttelton to the native village of Raupaki ; while, to a non-professional eye there appears no really practical difficulties in the way of converting the present bridle-path into a really good cart-road, when the circumstances of the colony will allow. The road passes through Raupaki, disturbing Beveral boundaries of individual properties owned by the natives ; but, as we understand, no obstruction was offered on their part to the arrangements proposed by the Provincial engineer. How far the road will be continued this season, or what will be its precise route, we have not been able to ascertain. — Lyttelton Times, April 30. Canterbury Grain Market.— At the market at Christchurch, on Saturday' last, flour was s6ld at £20 per ton ; wheat, to be delivered at the Ferry Wharf, was disposed of at 60. per bushel ; and oats realized from 4s. 6d. to ss. per bushel. — Ibid.
