ft*O the ELECTORS of the TOWN of X NELSON. _ Gentlemen — At the request of a number of my fellow* citizens I beg to offer myself as a Candidate to represent you in the Provincial Council, Should you do me the honour of electing me, it will bt my study to promote economy in the public expenditure, as the surest means of securing the benefits which should accrue to us from the libarty we are about to enjoy of managing our own affairs. I am, gentlemen, Your obedient and faithful servant, June 17th, 1853. G. F. Bosh. TN consequence of MR. R. J. CREASY •L having been invited by a large majority at three different •public meetings to come forward as a Candidate to represent the district of WAIMEA SOUTH, in the forthcoming Provincial Council, in the event of that gentleman complying with tho invitation, we, the undersigned, inhabitants of WAIMEA SOUTH, thinking him a fit and [proper person to represent the district, pledge ourselves to gfvc him our support. (Signed) C White B Lines G Ratt J Currin It Boddington J Lines W Ratt J.Knapp J Griffiths W Hammond J Hagan W Jeffrios J Hoult J Harris T Wagstaff H Garnett W Jessop J Wallace TTunnicliffa W PlankJ ; J Verry J Mears. T Prico To Mr. Charles White, and the other gentlemen signing the above Requisition. Gentlemen— l thank you for the honour you have done me in requesting me to become one of your Representatives in the Provincial Council for the district of Waimea South, and, in complying with your request, I must express my regret that you have not selected an older and more able settler to represent you with whose political opinions you could agree ; and I assure you I accede to your wishes with no other feeling than that of an earnest desire to promote, to the best of my abilities, the welfare of your district, and the Province of Nelson generally. • The humble position which I occupy, together with my [short residence among you, should probably have led me to dscline the honour you propose bestowing upon me, but I hold it to be the bounden duty of every citizen to take an interest in the government of his country, and small as my individual efforts may be in the cause of liberal freedom, if you consider they can in any way be made conducive to your interests, such as they are they shall be at your command. It will be perhaps expected that I should make a statement of my political creed, which I will do in a few words. lam the friend of that government which has for its object the welfare of the masses, instead of bestowing its chief care in promoting the welfare of a class ; and I need therefore scarcely say that if I have the honour of representing you in the Provincial Council, I shall strenuously oppose a wasteful expenditure of tbe public funds, and do my best to cause the Revenue of the Province to be devoted to the development of its resources, and to promote tbe social and moral welfare of its inhabitants. As tbe question of public Education may not unlikely fall under the consideration of the Provincial Legislature, I wish to say that I would promote any measure that would ensure to every child in the Province useful instruction, so far as that was practicable with the funds that could be spared for the purpose ; and the system which I should be prepared to advocate, until I was satisfied that a better could be devised, would be the plan of teaching adopted by the British and Foreign School Society. The questions of the Suffrage and the Ballot will not be likelyito form part of Provincial Legislation, but I will nevertheless say that I can see no reason why every adult man of good character should not have a vote in the choice of Representatives, after qualifying himself by a residence of six months in the Province ; and with respect to the manner of voting, I believe the Ballot alone can give that perfect independence to electors which is the fundamental principle of our Constitution, and wanting which, its working can never be perfectly healthy, nor produce those great benefits for us which, I believe, if fairly and honestly worked out, it is well calculated to realize. I am, gentlemen, Your most obedient servant, June 23. Robert John Creasy. MR. HAWK begs most respectfully to inform the Gentry and Inhabitants of Nelson and its vicinity that he intends opening a BOARDING and DAY SCHOOL on the premises belonging to, and atpresent occupied by H. Martin, Esq., and trusts by strict attention to the morals and education of the young gentlemen, to merit the approbation of those parents who may intrust their sons to his care. The course 01 study will embrace the usual branches of a liberal education, viz., Latin, Ancient and Modern History, Geography, Mensuration, Mental Arithmetic, Plain and Ornamental Writing, &c. Terms. Boarders (per annum) . . . . 30 guineas Weekly ditto „ .... 25 „ Day Pupils (including Latin) 2 guineas per quarter. The Rev. F. H.
