New Speculation. — We are informed, that a wealthy and enterprising foreigner has arrived by one of the last ships from Europe, who intends to commence the growth of cotton and- tobacco on a large scale. 'It is stated, that he is already negotiating for a number of sectHuis of land suitable for this purpose, and is exceedingly sanguine", from the nature of the soil and climate, as to the ultimate success of his new undertaking. ,, He has also' some other projects in contemplation, of a more secondary nature, which he keeps in tbe back ground. On the subject of tobacco, he is confident of producing' an article equal to prime "Yirgrony,'' burin this' matter he' will probably find out his mistake: It' is 1 well' ktloWn, that Australia produces a leaf etjtfal to Virginia' or the v most' fertile parts of Kentucky, but the great' difficulty is to extract the superabundant nitre. In New England, N.S.W., as fine a fig as could be wished for is manufactured; under the superintendence of a " thoroughbred Virginian manufacturer," but the impossibility of extracting the nitre by the " heating,, or any other process, render* the flavour rank' and disagreeable. Perhaps cheroots, or the lower Lumber of' cigars, manufactured from the Australi&h leaf, might prove more successful. With regard to cotton, there can be no doubt of its success as far as the growth is concerned. The main question' would be, how to turn the produce to a remunerative account; considering our high rates of labour, and our distance from the European market, in neither of which could we possibly compete with the American growers.— Adelaide Time*, June 9.
It is much' easier to know what men are in general, than to know one man in particular.
