SPORTING.

[From the New Zealand Spectator, Feb. 16.] BURNHAM WATER, FEBRUARY 14th, 1850. On Thursday afternoon, the following races came off at Burnham Water race course. A considerable niynber of persons were on the ground to witness the sport, and the. day proved very favourable for the occasion.^ ' The first race was a private match between the owners of Pastile, Lady Helen, and Ancient Mariner, stakes five pounds each, once round and a distance. They subsequently agreed, however, to admit other horses, and the following six horses started— Mr. St. Hill's Pastile I Mr. Fox's Ancient Mariner. S Dr. Feathers ton's Nominee ■» Mr. Skjnwith's Screw O Capt. sWFes'- -Lady Helen O Capt. Marshall's Vampire O In the early part of the race Pastile wa« leading, closely followed by Ancient Marine* and the other horses. Pastile mai_tai-ing he* place throughout the race, winning by about twenty yards, Ancient Mariner being seconds and Nominee third. The race was run in, 2-min. 9-sec. Lady Helen had a bad start and could not recover it. After the race a proteßt was given in against Pastile by the. owners of Ancient Mariner and Nominee. The next race, which afforded considerable amusement, was between the commanders of three vessels lying in harbour, viz., the Thames, the Cornelia, and the Camilla. The race was won by the Master of the Thames, on Scroggins. A match then took place between Mr. St. Hill's Orlando, and Mr. Ewen's Ganymede. Soon after passing the stand, Ganymede's. rider, owing to the breaking of one of his stirrup leathers, wat thrown, which gave Orlando the race, the latter winning in a canter. At the fint hurdle Lady Heijfn struck it and fell, throwing her rider, Vampire cleared the. hurjfllewbut, unfortunately, fell on Lad;%Helen, antr alio threw his rider. Hafrybogirle and Siddler both took their leapt really, and the race after the first hurdle lay between^ these two horse*, Harrybogine taking the. lead, and winning easily by about tea or twelve lengths. The day's amusements terminated with •* match between Rubens and Pastile, once round and a distance. Rubens carrying eleven stone,

and Pastile ten stone. This was a very good race, Pasiile leading until they came to the upper end of the course, when Rubens crept a- head, and came in about thirty yards a head of the mare. Rubens- was rode by Wintringham, and Pastile by Bromley.

AGLIONBY RACES. Wednesday, February 27th, 1850. The Eritonga. Stakes value £— , added to a sweepstakes of Two Guineas each. Heats, twice round the course, open to all horses; weights, 3 years 8 stone 7 lb., 4 years 9 stone 7 lb., 5 years 10 stone 61b., and aged 10 atone 7 lb. Second horse to save his stakes. The Petoni Stakes value £ — , added to a sweepstake of One Guinea each. Heats, twice round the course ; catch weights. Second horse to save his stakes. The Trial Stakes, value £ — , added to a sweepstakes of 10s 6d each, for horses that have never run a race in this colony. Post entrance, twica round and in : catch weights. Second horse to save his stakes. -» Thursday, Feb. 28th. Hurdle Race for a purse of £20, added to a sweepstakes of Two Guineas each. Heats, twice round the course, over hurdles 3 ft. 9 in. high, six leaps in each heat, open to all horses. Weights, 4 year old 10 stone, 5 years 10 stone 71b., 6 years and aged,l 1 stone. Second horse to save his stakes. The Ladies' Purse of £ — , added to a sweepstakes of Two Guineas each. Gen^emen riders. Heats, twice round the course. Weights, 6 years old and aged, 12 stone, 5 years 11 stone 71b., 4 years 11 stone, 3 years 10 etone. The Consolateon Stakes, value £ — , added to a sweepstakes of £1 Is. each, open to all beaten horses. Post entrances. Conditions the 6ame as for the Eritonga Stakes.
