A meeting of the inhabitants of Nelson was held yesterday at the Literary Institution, for the purpose of considering, preparatory to the arrival of the Governor, what measures would be most conducive to the welfare of this settlement. After some discussion, a committee was appointed to draw up a statement of our wants, which is to be submitted to another meeting.

By the return of the Lively from Auckland we have news from the north to the 18th of October. She has been twenty-seven days on her passage, having encountered head winds the whole distance. The intelligence brought is far from satisfactory. A truce of some kind is said to have been made with Heki, to allow his people time to plant potatoes; but as the Government withholds all information from the public, nothing positive is known. The name of Captain Fitzßoy's successor was unknown in Auckland, though English news, via Sydney, had been received to the 16th of June, the day only before the great New Zealand debate came on, when the announcement of Captain Grey's appointment was made. Captain Fitzßoy is apparently preparing for his departure, a sale of furniture being advertised at Government-house. The Daphne and Raceltorse left Auckland on the 2^l of October; the former for Valparaiso, and the latter for Sydney. The brigantine in sight this afternoon was the Comet, with sheep from Twofold Bay.
