AUCKLAND.
We yesterday received, via Wellington, a Southern Cross of the 4th of January. Whether this paper was part of the mail brought by the brig — in which case it ought to have reached us long sinee — or whether it was conveyed to Wellington by the last overland mail, we are unable to say. The papers previously received are three weeks later date, and there is little in this which is interesting to our readers. In an article on the " proposed new taxes," which we shall next week endeavour to find room for, our contemporary complains that the Income Tax has not yet received a fair trial, and that, with some amendments, it might be made to realize £B,ooo— the amount required. As far as these settlements are concerned, it never can receive a fair trial until the land claims are settled and titles given to the settlers ; and why they are withheld here we are at a loss to conceive, seeing the Government Commissioner made his award six months ago. The Company's fifteenth report is printed by our contemporary ; and, referring to that portion of it which states the determination of the Company to guarantee to intending purchasers no other title to land but such as it may obtain from the Crown, he says — " We can hardly imagine that many persons will be found to emigrate to the Company's settlements without some plainer and more certain understanding as to titles than what the report guarantees ;'*■ and alluding to the statement in the report that the Caledonia had sailed and was to be followed by the Slams Caitle, he tells us he is " aware some of the passengers are for this place." In both predictions our contemporary is a little wide of the mark. Notwithstanding the announcement in the Company's report (which he represents as " a blind to mislead the people as to the true state of their affairs"), upwards of forty persons have arrived here in these two vessels, some of whom will prove highly valuable settlers, and the passengers for Auckland amounted to one.
