*S IMPORTANT PUBLIC MEETING. A MEETING of the INHABITANTS of this Settlement will be held in front of the Institution, on WEDNESDAY next, February 4th, to take into consideration the propoted new taxes, and petition the Home Government to recall Captain Fitzroy, and give the colony a proper Representative Government. \ The chair will be taken at Twelve o'clork. ANNIVERSARY FET E.— jfi. first Day— Mo« day, February 3. RACES. Stewards— E. W. Stafford, Esq., Jamea S. Tjtler, Esq., Frederick Marshall, Esq. Tradesman's Plate of Ten Sovereigns, for all horses, to carry ten stone seven pounds. The winners of one race in* Mew Zealand (matches excepted} to carry ten pounds extra ; of two or more, fourteen pounds. Fourteen hands and under allowed seven pounds. Entrance, jc*l, to go to the fund. One mile and half. Scubky Stakes of One Sovereign each, Five Sovereigns added, for all horses ; last horse to pay second horse's stake. Catch weights. Heats. Once round and a distance. Hubdlb Stakes of Ten .Shillings each, Five Sovereigns added, over four sets of hurdles. Catch weights. Heats. Once round and a distance Pony Stakes of Ten Shillings each, Two Sovereigns added, for ponies of twelve hands and under. Catch weights^ Once round. Fobckd Handicap of Two Sovereigns each, p.p., Three' Sovereigns added, for the winners of the meeting. Horses to be handicapped by the stewards, or whom they may appoint, immediately after the race for the hurdle stakes. Heats. Once round and a distance. Ladies' Purse of Five Sovereigns, given by the ladies of Nelson, added to a Handicap Sweeprtakea of One Sovereign each, for the beaten horses of the meeting. Second horse to save his stakes. Horses to be handicapped by the stewards, or whom they may appoint, immediately after the race for the hurdle stakes. Heats. Once Tound and a distance. Horses to be named and entrance paid to the stewards on or before Seven o'clock on the evening of the Ist February ; or double entrance at the pest to be paid before the horse is permitted to start. Mo money will be given by the stewards for a walk over ; nor unless two horses, the bond, fide property of separate persons, do start. Five per cent, will be deducted from the winners of each race, to go to the fund. A hell will ring for saddling and for starting. Mot mor> than five minutes allowed after the ringing of the second bell, when tlie horses at the post will be started. All disputes to be settled by the stewards, whose decision shall be final. All dogs found on the course will he destroyed. Horses to be at the post for the Tradesman's Plate at halfpast Eleven precisely. Second Day — Tur*day, Vcbruary 4. AQUATIC SPORTS. Committee— S. Carkeek, Esq., W. Fox, Esq., J. Poynter, Esq. Sailing Matcii for boats from any part of New Zealand. Prize for first class, £7 ; for second clans, £5. No entrance. First class boats not to take second prize, but second class boats may win either. Rowiisg Match for whale boats belonging to Nelson, not exceeding five oars. Prize, £b. Entrance, 7s. 6d. Rowing Match for four-oared gigs. Prize, £3. Entrance, ss. The sailing boats will take up their places at Twelve o'clock, and start at a quarter after Twelve precisely. All boats must be en'ered with Mr. Carkeek or Mr. Poynter, at or before Ten o'clock on the morning of sailing. MINOR SPORTS. Committee— Mr. Macshane, Mr. C. Elliott, Mr. Redwood, Mr. Dillon, Mr. Dale. Wbestling Match.— Prize, one guinea. Wheelbaksow Race.— Prize, ten shillings. Jingling Match. — Prze, ten shillings. Two Foot Races. — Prize, a quarter of mutton each. Jumping in Sacks. — Prize, ten shillings. These sports will take place on the Cricket Ground, and will commence half-an-hour after the termination of the boat races. Flax dressing by Hand-Machines — For the machine that shall produce the greatest quantity of flax and the best sample in one hour, with the least manual labour, first prize, £3 35. ; second ditto, £l Is. This exhibition will take place near the Cricket Ground, at Four o'clock in the af:ernoon. Persons intending to compete for this prize, must signify their intention to Mr. C. Elliott, at or before Ten o'clock in the morning. Samples of Dock, Dull. Canvass, and Matting, manufactured from New Zealand flax by Donlan's process, with samples of Flax prepared for spinning, will be exhibited at the Institution from noon till dusk. The committee will attend at the Institution on Wednesday, at Eleven o'clock, to pay the prizes and expenses ; but they wish it to be distinctly understood that they hold themselves liable only to the amouut paid into the treasurer's hands.
