LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
i The Bishop of New Zealand arrived yesterday, in the Government Brig, from New Plymouth. We understand his lordship's stay will be but short, it being his intention to visit the Chathams in the Victoria, which proceeds there early in the week.
As the Bishop will probably leave Nelson on Tuesday, no time should be lost in ascertaining the views and intentions of his lordship relative to the expenditure of the £5,000 placed in his hands by the New Zealand Company.
The Government brig has brought us down a new Sheriff and a Deputy Postmaster. Mr. Marshall, a young gentleman who came out in the Prince of Wales, is the sheriff; but we have yet to learn whether he, like Mr. M'Donald, will act gratuitously. A clergyman and his lady were also passengers. This gentleman, we presume, will be a welcome assistant to Mr. Reay, whose duties for some time past have been such as would well admit of division.
On Tuesday last a Maori named E Moro was convicted at the Police Office of stealing a loaf from the shop, of Mr. Magafry, and sentenced to one month's imprisonment.
On Wednesday a man named Phipps was charged by Mr. Beit with having failed to fulfil a contract he had entered into for sawing timber at the Waimea. The defendant, on finding he was about to be sent to prison, for three months, requested to be allowed one month to complete his contract, which was granted.
