The plot thickens. Mac Leod's trial had been put off till the list of prisoners had been gone through, and was expected to take place on the 4th of October. ,/rßeneraHm{>res#ion prevailed that he would be acquitted on evidence of an alibi; but it seems questionable whether Judge Lynch will let him off so easily. The border rabble on both hides are doing everything to fotnent a war. One Colonel 4sroaan, who appears to be no better than a border bgndit. had been kidnapped on the 20th of September ; from whjfcb side of the frontier was. doubtful, and whether by order of the authorities or by amateur rogue takers seemed equally uncertain. At all events he was taken to Montreal, and lodged in gaol. The Montreal papers speak of him as a man who has long defrauded the gallows of its due. The Ameriontw were holding meetings, spouting, and writinfiL Daracraphs on the -subject. The President of the United States hadissued a ploclamation, dated 25th September, in the strongest terms reprehending warning ami threatening, in which be declares that the Government will not reclaim an American citizens any who may fall into the hands of the British authorities in their lawless incursions.
