CAITHNESS WINS METROPOLITAN

SECOND DAY AT RICCARTON LADY SCHOLAR'S OAKS (Special to “The Mail") Christchurch, This Day. After a fine morning, rain set in half-way through the proceedings at Riccarton on Saturday, but it was not heavy enough to affect the course to any serious extent. The first day winners in Golden Souvenir, Palm Bearer and Irish Note were again successful and in each case small dividends were returned.

Golden Souvenir was backed down to extravagant odds on for the Churchill Gold Cup and after r.n interesting struggle with Master Robin over the last 50 yards, got the verdict by half a length. Riyerview endeavoured to slip his field from the start and with half the journey covered had four lengths’ advantage of John o’ London and Master Robin with Golden Souvenir at the rear of the field. Riverview held his advantage till well into the home straight where he retired in favour of Master Robin. Here, Golden Souvenir, who had gradually improved his position, challenged Master Robin and got up in time to win by half a length. AlSirat was a length and a-half back in third place and on this form it looked as if he were lucky to beat Master Robin in the Derby. NEW ZEALAND OAKS STAKES Though there was nothing outstanding in the field that went out to contest the New Zealand Oaks Stakes, they were a well balanced lot of fillies. Loch Derg soon opened up a useful lead but was in difficulties a long way from home. A furlong from the post there was little to choose. The best were Kashmiri, Lady Scholar, Swingalong and Belle Leonne but once McFarlane asked Lady Scholar for serious effort she drew right away to win easily by three lengths from Swingalong and Kashmiri. It was a high class performance on the part of the w'nnci;, who is a Trentham-trained daughter of Rhodes Scholar and Golden Song. DESPERATE FINISH IN METROPOLITAN Longs word was responsible for a great effort in the Metropolitan Handicap and though he failed to catch Caithness by a head it was one of the finest performances of the meeting. Caithness was slow to begin and it was not till the home turn was reached that she became prominent. In a desperate finish Caithness just got there by a neck from the topweight. Miss Medley went an improved race in getting third money, but after having every opportunity Piccolo and Sir Bian were both found wanting over the concluding stages. ELLIS’S THIRD WIN RUNNING When L. J. Ellis won the Seymour Handicap it marked his " ’ ""cccssive victory. The veteran horseman is riding in his best form again and he can still go to the scales at 7st 81bs. By winning the Pioneer Handicap after ben* sadly placed m the early stages Palm Bearer made good her claim to be considered one of the best two-year-oJds seen out at the Riccarton meeting. She and Blue Trout are engaged in the Acorn Stakes Handicap next Saturday, but it is doubtful if bolh will see the post. Fields at Riccarton next Saturday are sure to be small as most of the North Island horses are returning home in the course of a few days. Visiting owners find that three weeks stay at C.J.C. headquarters is altogether too long. W. J. Broughton resumed riding at Riccarton on Saturday but was still showing the effects of his accident. When Caithness won the Metropolitan Handicap it marked her first success for two seasons. When Irish Note showed to advantage in the Jockey Club Handicap it registered the first occasion on which any horse has accounted for that event and the Steward's -’andicap. The attendance was below Cup Day, but a satisfactory increase of £l3 668 • v^. a , s 0 J ecorde d. the sum handled bein® £l24 ' 436 compared with £110,767 10s on the second day last year.
