40-HOUR WEEK IN FACTORIES
PROVISION IN AMENDING BILL (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) Wellington, This Day. The universal application of the 40hour week to factories is provided for in the Factories Amendment Bill introduced in the House of Representatives Where work is done on Saturday time and a half rates are to be paid. Previously workers in certain factories, including freezing works, dairy factories, fellmongeries and pt.ll works, jam factories and bacon factories were excluded from the 40-liour week provision. The Bill was read a second time pro forma and referred to the Labour Bills Committee. . Another clause gives power for inspection of factories by representatives of the Health Department. If it appears to any such representatives of the department that any matter affecting health should be remedied and appropriate steps are not taken he is to report the matter to the DirectorGeneral of Health. Where the limit of hours of any worker is luced to 40 a week the Arbitration Court for the purpose of removing anomalies or inequities due to the reduction of hours is given power to adjust the rates of wages and overtime conditions of the worker.
