HAPPINESS CLUB

The November meeting of the Happiness Club was held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall, when 83 members were in attendance. The meeting was opened in the usual manner, and members stood for one minute’s silence for world peace and protection and for those who had suffered bereavement during the past month, followed by the singing of the National Anthem and the “Happiness to You” song. The president extended a welcome to all members and hoped they would enjoy themselves in the companionship of fellow Happiness Club members. A special welcome was extended to “Gran” Martin, the mother president of all Happiness Clubs, who was presented with a spray. “Gran” Martin suitably replied. Members who had celebrated birthdays during the past month were presented with their birthday sprays. Apologies were received from Mesdames Downes, Scully, Claughton and Scott, senr. Sympathy was expressed towards two sick members with hopes for their speedy recovery. Nine new members were enrolled and welcomed into the club. The programme for the December meeting was announced as follows: Christmas Carols from the club Choir, Christmas tree for members’ children under 5 years, followed by a play presented by Mrs Hastie entitled “The Family Group.” Last year’s procedure of giving and receiving a Christmas gift was unanimously adopted. The competition papers for the year were given out and hopes expressed for record entries. Next month’s competition would be almond fingers, embroidered handkerchief made from a salt bag, and decorated floral saucer. Thanks were expressed to the following members: Mrs F. N. Jones, sick visitor; Mrs Sussex, pianist; Mrs Claughton, choir leader; Mrs Henry, competition judge; Mrs Silcock, embroidering signatures on club’s cloth. All these members have come forward again to help in the club’s activities. Alexandra Home will again be visited in December, and arrangements will be finalised at the next meeting when bus tickets will also be available. Members were requested to see that names of children under 5 years were handed in for the Christmas tree event. Donations towards the Christmas hamper were requested to be left with Mrs McKenzie, in Trafalgar street. A vote was taken on the question of holding a picnic and the decision is to be announced at the December meeting. Following the afternoon tea interval Mrs Hudson, secretary of the Crippled Children As r -*.r?ation, gave a very interesting and instructive talk on the work of that association. A vote of thanks was expressed by acclamation and a spray of roses presented to Mrs Hudson. The competition winners were as follows: Christmas novelty, Mrs Freeman 1, Mrs Benjamin 2, Mrs Hughes 3; best rose in garden, Mrs Benjamin 1, Mrs Smith 2, Mrs Hughes 3; sausage rolls, Mrs J. Walker 1, Miss Cooper 2; special competition, Mrs Garrett.
