MR STIMSON RETIRES

U.S. SECRETARY FOR WAR London, Sept. 18. Mr H. L. Stimson, who was appointed Secretary for War in President Roosevelt’s Administration in July, 1940, has resigned. He will be 79 this week. President Truman has described Mr Stimson, who is a Republican, as “one of the country’s greatest public servants.” Mr Robert Patterson, Under-Secre-tary for War, has been nominated to succeed Mr Stimson.
